Happy Thanksgiving: Advances in Women's Health We Are Most Thankful For
As I reflect on all that I am thankful for today, I have to include the progress
made in women's health research and development in the past year alone. We
now have medicines available that were only pipeline dreams a decade ago. According
to the Pharmaceutical Researchers and Manufacturers' Association, there are
now 348 additional new medicines in development for women.
- There are 60 new medicines in development for breast cancer, which may
kill 43,000 women in the U.S. this year.
- There are 38 new medicines in development for ovarian cancer, expected to
claim 14,000 lives in the US this year.
- There are 24 new medicines in development for rheumatoid arthritis, a progressive
cause of pain and disability in 1.5 million American women.
- There are 23 new medicines in development for Alzheimer's disease, which
kills more than 14,000 women a year.
- There are 18 new medicines in development for depression, which affects
12.6 million American women.
- There are 24 new medicines in development for osteoporosis, which affects
nearly 25 million American women and which caused two new fractures in the
past minute.
