The Importance of Osteoporosis Testing
As the only woman who has won all 4 major acting awards (Oscar, Emmy, Tony,
Grammy), Rita Moreno has quite a trophy collection. But in accepting her most
recent award from the National Osteoporosis Foundation for her work in raising
awareness about this disease, she said that this award was going right next
to her Oscar--because her health achievements mean as much to her as her passion
for acting.
"It's very important that the women of this country be made aware of
the dangers of osteoporosis in the sense that it is a silent and invisible disease
with no symptoms whatsoever."
Miss Moreno admits that she thought she was protected from
this condition because of her years of dance and physical activity. She was
not aware that she had two of the most important risks: being female and being
menopausal. Fortunately, her doctor recommended a bone density test which picked
up the earliest signs of bone loss and she was able to take corrective action
before any damage was done.
"Bone density tests are the most important thing for a woman who is
reaching or into menopause. It's vitally important that she get measured and
find out what her bone health is about".
