Be Prepared: Advice On A Well-outfitted First Aid Kit
(Washington, DC, February 20, 2003): With so much uncertainty in the
world, the Council on Family Health (CFH) advises Americans to be certain they
have well-stocked first aid kits in case of emergency. To assist, CFH is making
its "Always Be Prepared" resources available online to consumers.
The materials include a tip sheet providing families with general health and medicine
information, as well as a checklist to help consumers determine what to include in their
first aid kits. The Council also has assembled links to government emergency preparedness organizations as
sources for additional information.
"First aid kits are essential to have on hand for any type of emergency,"
says CFH President Robert G. Donovan. "It's also a good idea to
look at what your daily medication needs are, especially for the elderly and
those with chronic illnesses." CFH recommends consumers:
- Keep at least a day's supply of needed medicines with them
when away from home, in case of unexpected delays returning.
- Maintain well-stocked first aid kits in both their home and
car.
- Make sure their first aid kits include appropriate healthcare
items and resources such as a first aid manual and a list of emergency telephone
numbers.
"These are uncertain times," concludes Donovan, "but Americans
certainly can take simple steps to help ensure they are ready to handle emergencies."
