Q: I have been hearing about a "new" Chinese pills called "Fruta Planta". It is being currently sold on amazon.com. You can lose up to 25 lbs in one month. I know some individuals taking it and have lost a lot of weight. They say the only side effect that they have experienced is dry mouth. Is this a Phen Phen pill in Chinese form? Please let me know before I consider it.
Dr. Donnica: My general philosophy is that if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. I cannot recommend this product for several reasons. First, it is very unclear to me what the ingredients are, even though the marketing materials say “100% natural”. The ingredient list is not in English, nor could I find a reputable source for the actual ingredients. Next, the product is not FDA approved. While there are several positive testimonials on amazon.com, I am often suspicious about whether those are from “real” users or from those trying to market the product. There are several patient reports of severely dry mouth, palpitations, sleep disturbances & jitteriness. For an ideal weight loss strategy, aim for losing 1-3 pounds per week by portion control, eating 3 healthy meals per day & two small snacks, getting adequate sleep, & 20 minutes of aerobic exercise 5 times per week.
