Flying Early in Pregnancy
Q: I just found out I am 5 weeks pregnant, however I have booked a holiday
in two weeks time and I'm concerned about the radiation and its effect on the
embryo. I am healthy and have no complications. The flight is 10 hours there
and back, making it a total of 20 hours exposure in my 7th and 9th weeks. Is
there reason to be concerned and should I cancel my flight?
Dr. Donnica: Congratulations on your pregnancy! No reason to be concerned
about radiation. Request an aisle seat, though, because you may have to get up
more frequently to use the bathroom especially since I recommend that you drink
a lot of water. I also recommend that on a flight like this you get up frequently
to walk and stretch your legs. Do not wear knee-highs or other tight/binding garments.
Enjoy your trip!
