Synthroid
Q: I was wondering if synthroid is safe to take if you have been told you
can't take hormones when going through the change. I noticed that synthroid
is a hormone replacement.
Dr. Donnica: Synthroid is a thyroid hormone, but that's not what they mean
when they're talking about "hormone replacement therapy" or HRT. HRT
specifically refers to replacing estrogen and progesterone, the most important
female hormones, for women going through menopause and having menopausal symptoms.
While HRT may improve the quality of life for many women, it is not essential
for life. For women with hypothyroidism (under-active thyroid), thyroid replacement
hormone (e.g. Synthroid) is essential. You should discuss with your doctor exactly
why you're taking Synthroid, if you are indeed taking it. You should also find
out why you were told not to take HRT.
