Checking Out Freckles and Moles
Q: I've had freckles and moles all my life. How do I know if any of them are
the kind I need to be concerned about?
Dr. Donnica: Fair-skinned folks with freckles are at higher risk for skin
cancer, so it is a good thing to be concerned, especially if you have any family
history of skin cancer. The best thing to do is to have an annual "mole check"
or thorough skin exam by a dermatologist.
Between visits, rest assured that moles and freckles you've had for several
years without any changes are fine. You need to be aware of any changes in mole
size, shape, border regularity or color. Moles that bleed easily should also
be evaluated sooner rather than later.
