Help for Those in Need of Extensive Weight Loss
Q: I am 33 years old. I have developed a heart condition from taking fen-phen,
but still need to lose weight. I am looking for some type of teaching center
that would perform the lap-band surgery on me. I need to lose weight so bad,
but cannot take any more diet pills.
Please help me doctor, I am too young to die like this.
Thanks--JA
Dr. Donnica: Good for you for recognizing that you have a serious
health problem that needs medical attention. You are not only too young to die,
but you're too young to live in such misery. I regret that I cannot recommend
individual physicians or hospitals to you. However, I do recommend the Morbid
Obesity Center at www.spotlighthealth.com,
which not only gives great information about all of the surgical options for
treatment of morbid obesity, but also has a "Doctor
Finder" section.
In the meantime, I strongly recommend consulting a nutritionist or starting
a program like Weight Watchers to prepare you for your surgery. It's never too
late to improve your diet and begin to exercise, so long as you clear any exercise
regimen with your cardiologist first. I hope this is helpful to you.
