Lack Of Energy
Q: I have an "energy" problem that I need your advice with. I am
only 25 years old and I have the energy of someone four times my age. My metabolism
runs high and I only weigh 117lbs at 5' 7". I can go to sleep at 8:00 at
night and wake up at 9:00 the next morning and still have no energy, no mater
how well I slept. I don't know what to do.
Dr. Donnica: It is easy for me to tell you what to DO, although
it's not that easy to tell you what you have. You must see your physician for
a complete physical including blood work. There are many possible causes including
thyroid problems, chronic fatigue syndrome (a systemic infection), or other
infections such as mononucleosis; anemia or other blood disorders; diabetes
or other endocrine disorders; and numerous other possibilities.
The good news is that most of these conditions are treatable. From now until
your appointment, I recommend that you keep a diary listing all your symptoms,
sleeping habits and food/beverage intake. Bring this with you when you see
your doctor along with any medications you take, including vitamins and supplements
and non-prescription medicines.
