A Variety of Bladder Problems

Q: I am a 34-year-old woman with a bladder problem. I have a pain in my right side that never stops. It feels like something is pushing on my organs. I go to the bathroom about 7 times at night and experience a lot of pain when having sex. My stomach looks like I am 4 months pregnant. I have orange urine. I have had interstitial cystitis for years now and doctors tell me there's no cure for my problem, but I can't live like this. I have to wear panty liners to hold my urine and I have an odor of urine that I hate. I stay at home because of this and feel less of a woman. I also have back pain and it's been causing me to have high blood pressure. Please help!

D.

Dr. Donnica:
I am so sorry to hear about your difficulties.  I am particularly concerned about a few things, however.  While you may have intersticial cystitis (IC), you may also have another problem that's making this much worse over the past few months.  Have you consulted a nephrologist (kidney specialist)?  I think you need an ultrasound of your kidneys (and your uterus and ovaries) to evaluate that pain and swelling.  New onset high blood pressure can also be caused by kidney problems.  I am also concerned that the color of your urine may be due to blood. You need a complete urinalysis as well if you haven't had one recently.

How are you being treated for your IC?  There is a medicine called Elmiron, which may help.  There are also medications available which may help with your incontinence (urine loss) depending upon which type your doctor determines that you have.  Ask your doctor if you are a candidate for this.
