Hypothyroidism & PMDD
Q: I am 28. About 8 months ago I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism.
This week I was diagnosed with PMDD as well. Blood tests have been done to test
my thyroid and an endocrine panel has been done to rule out menopause. I have
been researching both problems and am uncomfortable with trying to distinguish
the difference in symptoms. Please help me to understand the likelihood of suffering
both disorders, or tell me if a second opinion is warranted.
Thank you, V.W.
Dr. Donnica: PMDD and hypothyroidism can share many symptoms. However,
the diagnosis of hypothyroidism is easily confirmed with a blood test, while
PMDD is based on a clinical diagnosis (i.e. no blood test is available and we
make the diagnosis based upon your symptoms). It IS possible to have both
conditions and each would make the other seem worse. Did the same doctor
make both diagnoses? Ask how improvements with the hypothyroid treatment
will impact your course of treatment for the PMDD and vice versa. Click
here for more information on PMDD. Click here for more information
on thyroid problems.
