Urinary Frequency
Q: My friends and I often joke about having
"mommy bladders" because it seems that we have to go to the bathroom frequently.
How many times per day is really normal?

Dr. Donnica: Sometimes things are not what they seem. The best way
to track how frequently you're going to the bathroom is to actually keep a diary
for a few days. And don't forget the nights! Overactive bladder (OAB) is defined
as having to urinate more than 8 times per day and two or more times per night.
Be sure to jot down if you are using the restroom because you "have" to go,
or whether it's a "just in case" kind of visit. Write down other symptoms as
well: whether you thought you wouldn't make it on time, or if you had a sudden
urge to void. It is important to note whether you had any accidents, even though
this may be embarrassing. If you did, write down what seemed to "cause" the
leak -- was it laughter, a cough, a sneeze, exercise class, lifting something,
or just nothing at all? Also note whether you have any pain associated with
urinating or any blood in your urine. Take these notes with you when you consult
your doctor.
