Pharmacogenomics
Q: What do you predict will be the most exciting health breakthrough(s)
in the next decade?
Dr. Donnica: Undoubtedly, pharmacogenomics. This is the field involved
in using genetic information and genetic testing to customize medical therapies.
Specifically, I'm predicting that we will develop genetic tests to identify
conditions such as endometriosis long before they become clinically apparent,
as well as a test to identify the small percentage of women who may be at increased
risk from therapies like hormone replacement therapy. The more information
we learn from the Human Genome Project, the more exciting ways we will learn
to apply it. I would like to say that another exciting health breakthrough
would be the elimination of smoking, but I'm not that optimistic!
