Vulvar Cancer
Q: What is vulvar cancer?
Dr. Donnica: Vulvar cancer is a malignancy that appears as lesions on
the surface of the vulva or labia. Any abnormal growth or discoloration in
that area should be reported to your gynecologist. In some cases, it may appear
as itching in the vulvar area that won't go away.
The good news about vulvar cancer is that it is relatively rare and it is often
curable if caught early. The bad news is that the cure is surgical, often involving
not only surgical removal of the vulvar lesions, but the lymph nodes in the
groin as well.
Risk factors for vulvar cancer include diabetes, advanced age (especially over
age 70) and chronic vulvar irritation.
