Pregnancy and the Pill

Q: I stopped the pill at the end of June, finishing that pack. I haven't had a period yet and have been trying to get pregnant. My home pregnancy tests always come back negative. How long from when you conceive does it take too show up on the pregnancy test? I can get pregnant without having a period first, right?

- M.

Dr. Donnica:
When women stop taking birth control pills, they may not get their normal period for a while, even if they're not pregnant.  This is not unusual. A woman can ovulate at any time after stopping the Pill, so it is possible that you may have gotten pregnant too soon before taking the home pregnancy test to see a result.  If you haven't gotten your period by the end of August (2 months) and the home pregnancy test is still negative, it is time to see your doctor for a check-up.  Your doctor may order a blood pregnancy test (which is more accurate than a home pregnancy test) and if you are really not pregnant, may give you medicine to bring on your period.  In the meantime, click here to read about steps you should take before conceiving.
