Rectal Bleeding

Q: My very best friend in the whole world is experiencing a large amount of bleeding in her stool and a large amount of bleeding from her rectum after she has used the restroom. She's only passing little pebbles though. I want to help her, but she doesn't want to talk about it.

--L.A.

Dr. Donnica:
From what you've told me, she may just have bleeding hemorrhoids from bad constipation! However, anyone who has blood in their stools should consult a physician and have a thorough physical as soon as possible. That will include a digital rectal exam, which all adults should have annually anyway. Most people don't like to talk about these kinds of "embarrassing" medical problems; you are a very good friend to try to help.
